On the evening of October 23, 2024, Professor Marie.Harder from the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University invited Dr. Liu Wei from Alibaba and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) to deliver a vivid and thought-provoking academic lecture to the university's faculty and students. This lecture, the third one in the Frontier Sustainable Science Series of Environment Forum, was supported by Fudan University's International Office's "Double First-Class" Global Development Strategy Advancement Project and was hosted by Dr. Huang Yanyan from Fudan University's Sustainable Behavior Research Group. The lecture emphasized ESG as a bridging concept—it is an intermediate knowledge system connecting theory and practice and serves as a boundary object to form consensus among diverse interest groups.
Dr. Liu Wei first traced the historical development of ESG, highlighting its role as a key framework in the sustainability field over the past two decades. He discussed global trends impacting ESG, such as climate change, social inequality, and biodiversity, and how interactions among different international actors and the evolution of international revelational norms have shaped the current ESG landscape. Furthermore, Dr. Liu pointed out that ESG, as a bridging concept and boundary object, can connect stakeholders and facilitate dialogue and collaboration across sectors. Lastly, Dr. Liu focused on the challenges and opportunities for ESG in the post-hype era, stressing the importance of the flexibility and adaptability of ESG as a clumsy solution in addressing future global challenges.
During the discussion session, Professor Yang Yanqing proposed from an economic perspective that within the ESG domain, we can focus on the perspective of "carbon reduction" and more specifically implement environmental protection into actionable plans. Professor Marie Harder suggested that ESG is a bridge connecting different concepts and stakeholders, but the actual effectiveness of this bridge is worth our attention. She also highlighted the relationship between "measurement" and "fact," emphasizing that reflecting the true situation of events is more important than simply fixating on measurement. Also, the Sustainable Behavior Research Team at Fudan University has mastered a method that can effectively measure the shared values of local communities, which can serve as an effective communication bridge between local communities and policymakers.
In the Q&A session, Dr. Wu Wenhao asked about better understanding the relationship between ESG and resilience. Dr. Liu Wei indicated that rather than mere analysis of the specific meanings and boundaries of each concept, it is more important to be rooted in communities and engage in practical work and action. Dr. Yu Huajun inquired about how to better balance the importance of various issues in the ESG field. Dr. Liu Wei emphasized the need to be grounded in communities around the world, listening to their different issues and needs, to develop corresponding tailored solutions.
Dr. Liu Wei's lecture not only provided us with a comprehensive analytical perspective on ESG but also pointed the way for future research and practice for faculty and students. Through this lecture, the faculty and students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of ESG in global sustainable development and were inspired to think about future possibilities. Dr. Liu Wei's insights undoubtedly injected new momentum and inspiration into our exploration of the ESG field.
