Research interests
I have previously worked in physics, and in waste and recycling. I now focus entirely on shared values-based approaches, which has applications in many disciplines from anthropology to environmental science. Sustainable Behaviour Research Group This area of work is highly interdisciplinary and novel: I am leading in the establishment of a new paradigm in the understanding of shared values and its use to reveal new knowledge from values-in-action/experiential knowledge. In recent years I have completed the first platform of papers opening up links to separate disciplines (evaluation, environmental management, design, business strategy, education), and as this continues (climate change adaptation, contaminated land remediation, urban design, international development) I am now working on disciplinary cross-links and understandings of the microprocesses e.g. of different learning taking place, and the nature of different knowledges involved. The latter currently involves philosophical understanding of processes to localise universal lists such as the Capabilities Approaches of Sen and Nussbaum; forms of knowledge production and exchange e.g. linking Nonaka and Polanyi; new understandings of tacit knowledge and transformational learning c.f. Mezirow. Besides the academic explorations I have been raising the profile of the usefulness to several fields.
Briefly speaking, my team has now completed around 30 international peer reviewed papers on WeValue, including linking its theoretical foundations to well-known theories in knowledge creation (Nonaka) and personal learning (Polanyi) and concepts in Sustainability Science. We have demonstrated successful and useful contributions in about 8 different disciplines, all of which open up new areas of research in those disciplines. We have developed applications for a global 5-year Child Stunting Global Challenges program which is just finishing; a UK Infrastructure Investment research program just finishing, and several types of applications in Cities, Resilience and Climate Change Adaptation. We are in the process of writing a foundational Open Access academic book about WeValue, and a Facilitators Manual - both contracts signed with Routledge. In parallel we are developing a monster website in Fudan, hoping for a parallel one at UOB. We are now focusing on carefully nurturing targeted alliances to get it mainstream into international development, including via a Great Green Wall project in Senegal, and via influencers in NSF USA and WB. We have also been invited to develop applications in NUS Cities Institute in Singapore.

Special awards, honours and distinctions
In 2011 I was offered a China National Thousand Talents Professorship to be taken up at Fudan University, Shanghai, P.R. China. This is a prestigious appointment at a world top-50 university which came with a 5-year research grant and the availability of a new PhD studentship each year. The award is in recognition of potential to develop internationalisation of researchers at Fudan in the general area of sustainability, and followed a selection process by advisors internationally (including in the UK). I have since been asked to stay on as a Distinguished Professor.
In 2024, I was awarded the China Friendship Medal, which is the highest award for a foreigner in China. In early 2025, I was invited to attend the National Foreign Experts Panel hosted by the Premier of PR China Mr. LI Qiang. I was awarded the Shanghai City Magnolia Award (Gold) in 2022 for services to internationalization in the metropolis and as the highest-scoring awardee, I was invited by a contingent from the Office of the Mayor to deliver the acceptance speech on behalf of all the awardees. One of my most satisfying life achievements is that, although this speech is often pre-drafted for foreigners, I wrote mine from scratch and it passed 5 levels of scrutiny to a warm welcome: it was published in full at high level within China. It reflected my keen desire to absorb and appreciate the culture of my host country, and to able to humbly express myself authentically to a formal Chinese audience, in a manner they found appropriate.
In November 2023 my Honorary Professorship at University College London (The Bartlett School of Construction and Project Management) was renewed (initial award in April 2020).
In January 2018 I was invited to become a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts.

3.3 End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) shredder residues: characterisation and recycling
This single, huge project, listed above, spawned several others, spanning many scientific disciplines. For example, it was crucial to determine the relative proportions of different families of polymers present in the shredder residue, and the academic literature would lead one to believe that numerous systems exist such as infra-red and x-ray, which can do that. When trials of these showed them not to be useful, the group devised its own system of identification using a combination of several techniques from physical and chemical sciences. The extended piece of work detailing the findings of the materials present in shredder residue is in preparation for publication in academic journals, but its results have already been made use of in the related UK industries, as the key stakeholders were collaborators in this work.

3.6. Pyrolysis of shredder residues and issues of heavy metal contamination
The projects below represent my work on pyrolysis of wastes – an example of how I have had to move across disciplines like mechanical engineering for the separation of shredder residue, to chemical engineering for pyrolysis and physics for X-ray fluorescent spectroscopy, because this flexibility is needed to pursue problems in waste/resource management to a solution.

An issue that was brought to light with this above work was the unexpected lead content as a contaminant in the resultant ash. The level found prevented immediate consideration of the material as a substitute raw material for brick making, but even more importantly was an indicator of the hazardous nature of the automotive shredder residue. This became a crucial issue for the industry, the Environment Agency and the DTI, who later quoted this work in making their borderline decision to categorise SR as non-hazardous. A fundamental question was the speciation of the lead present, in order to determine its source, e.g. from wheel weights (metallic) or compounds used in older polymers. We are currently developing a novel approach to resolve this problem, working with manufacturers of specialist analytical equipment.
As SR is mixture of many materials whose composition varies by the hour, we have also helped the field develop a better understanding of statistical sampling, and am working to show that the use of a portable XRF spectrometer to take multiple (hundreds), approximate readings of SR contaminants is more useful than a few sent to precision labs. This work is currently the focus of a large DTI Technologies bid, with the manufacturer of the PXRF. It is also the subject of our academic papers.
